How to practice self-care to optimize your well-being

How do you define self-care? You might say self-care means eating healthfully and exercising, which is all well and true. But self-care really is a multi-faceted approach to health and well-being, and it's important to have multiple ways of caring for yourself.

The following is a list of questions that you can ask yourself to identify areas of self-care you're regularly attending to, and what areas you could focus on to take better care of yourself. There are five main areas of well-being: emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social and physical.

Emotional

What helps me express my feelings?

Where does my happiness come from?

How do I express my feelings in a healthy way?

What cheers me up when I'm feeling down?

Spiritual

What helps me get through hardships?

What helps me find my purpose in life?

What helps me look at things positively?

Intellectual

What is my motivation?

What helps me to take a step back when things feel overwhelming?

What helps me to relax my mind?

What helps me talk back to negative thoughts?

Social

How do I connect with people that help me care for myself?

Who are my support system; who are people I can confide in with my feelings and thoughts?

Physical

What helps me relax my body?

What do I do that helps my body be healthy?

What movement do I do that makes me feel good?

Take a few moments to reflect on these questions. Consider it your self-care checklist. Use it help you focus on areas of self-care you might be neglecting. Remember, EVERY BODY deserves love and care.
